Unexpected guest:) / Niezapowiedziany gosc!

Look who came to see us today 🙂

Kitten at our house
Kitten at our house

Don’t know where it lives or who it belongs to, but I have fell in love with the kitten the moment it appeared at our house – I guess just because it is a very nosy and cheeky cat 🙂 My hubby categorically stated, though, that there is no space for a cat in our tiny house… so it only got some delicacies and we had to see it off 😦

books, DIY, inspiration

Reading for the Weekend / Weekendowe czytanie

During an all-day shopping spree yesterday, where I searched through half of London to get all the stuff needed for my Diploma in Professional Interior Design which is about to start, I bought a book and a magazine which I recommend a lot:

Small Spaces: Making the Most of the Space You Have - by Rebecca Tanqueray and Chris Everard
Small Spaces: Making the Most of the Space You Have - by Rebecca Tanqueray and Chris Everard

Firstly: Small Spaces: Making the Most of the Space You Have. I really like this book as altough some spaces / floorplans perhaps are not the same as our flats and houses, it is very inspirational, and most importanly – offers a lot of ingenious storage solutions! Focusing on storage and multifunctional furniture, it is a good buy especially for someone who is not afraid of experimenting or DIY (or spending some money on professionals) to turn some of the ideas into reality.

The second buy is the Livingetc October issue:

Livingetc October 2009 issue
Livingetc October 2009 issue

Yes, I admit it – I bought it because of the stunning cover (I just LOVE yellow and grey and patterns!!). Yes, I admit also that this is NOT a magazine for decorating on a budget. But – it’s cutting edge and provides loads of inspiration and GOSH! I don’t remember when was the last time I loved every page of a magazine! It is just stunning… check out especially:

  • the ‘Living With A Flatscreen TV‘ section showing how to blend yout TV into your room using very original solutions,
  • the ‘Modern Romance‘ section (Alex! watch out some of that might inspire your room 🙂 )
  • and the astonishing ‘7 ways we boosted our space’ house presentation with super-smart and pretty DIY solutions for both storage and flexibility (furniture on wheels as an example). And – believe it or not – they downsized the house to make more use of the garden and outside space.

———

POLECAM!

bedroom, inspiration, my projects

Pink bedroom for a 20-year old / rozowa sypialnia dla 20-latki

…So I am about to design and decorate a bedroom for a 20-year old Alex as her birthday present! It’s an attic room with one slanted wall, one big window, and pink walls with the slanted one in violet. Pink is a tricky color though, and Alex wants to avoid the room becoming too sweet and teenagey – after all, a young woman is to live there!

I have started the design process by finding some inspirations, which I will later present to Alex to find out her preferences. There are two styles I want to suggest: romantic and modern, and an extra twist with statement wallpaper.

  • First – the more romantic look with a wrought iron bed. A natural choice with pink, it enhances its feminine style and is very relaxing. Conducive to dreaming and planning, should create a good atmosphere for the whole day!

  • Now to more modern look. Stylish and simple, if slightly darker due to complementing with black rather than only white.

  • Finally, here are some ideas for enlivening the look with a statement wallpaper on one wall:

I will let you know what Alex prefers when she lets me know 🙂

Postanowilam rozpoczac od zrozumienia preferencji Oli, wiec zamierzam pokazac jej kilka propozycji by zrozumiec jej styl.

How pretty is that! Viv has completely remodeled her studio by converting an unused space in her house into this gorgeous haven of creativity! I live the DIY aspect of it which not only saved the budget, but also immensely personalized the space. Check out the gorgeous butterfly mobile, Eames style chair, painted wardrobe and this antique sideboard on the right! Not to mention the pretty designs over the desk (Viv’s own, and you can buy them in her Etsy shop here).

Co za piekne studio! Viv przemienila niewykorzystane miejsce w jej domu w przepiekne, kobiece studio w ktorym tworzy swoje male dziela. No i oczywiscie obrazki nad biurkiem, ktore sa dzielem Viv i ktore mozna kupic tu.

Living white / Mieszkac na bialo

I’ve noticed that you prefer white recently” wrote my Mum through IM a few days ago. Do I? I guess I do. Although I’m ashamed to admit it, it took me some time to acknowledge white as a color. I’ve always loved bold colors (even though my red bedroom was giving me headaches during my uni years). With time, however, perhaps the more interiors I’ve seen, the more I’ve learned how colors dramatically influence how we perceive everything around us.

  1. White is a great background to both statement pieces of art, and bold color accents. If you want to display a treasured painting, a gorgeous chair or any other item – what better background than white?? (unless the item is white 🙂 )
  2. White works for everyone. It makes interiors seem timeless, elegant, fresh. It’s exactly why we call it the blank canvas – everyone can imagine themselves in the space, even if to decide what other colors to use. It’s easy on our imagination, bluntly speaking.
  3. White works with every style. Normally we’d think – minimalist. But think also – modern; think shabby chic; French country, Scandinavian, etc, etc. Even think retro! (as a background to graphic designs)
  4. But most importantly, white = space. They are almost synonyms.  It will always create this feeling of spaciuosness, so desired in small places.

And yet, surprisingly, white seems to be used more in big spaces rather than small flats. I’ve realized it when looking through my inspirations collections to choose images for today’s post. All the post-industrial, ex-school buldings, lofts, barn conversions and quite a number of old big mansions boast the white interiors. So why not small flats? (And yes I know I admit my kitchen is green and my bathroom orange! I’m not saying everything needs to be white 🙂 )

Anyway here are some not-so-big-or-expensive places that I hope will inspire everyone to the gorgeous white…

  2. Bialy pasuje wszystkim i do wszystkiego.
  3. Bialy pasuje do kazdego stylu. Pierwsze skojarzenie – minimalizm. Ale takze nowoczesny, shabby chic, francuski, skandynawski, itd, itp.. nawet retro, jako kontrastowa podstawa do mocnych wzorow.
  4. Co najwazniejsze,  biel = przestrzen. To prawieze synonimy.

Wszystkie te post-industrialne, po-szkolne obiekty, lofty, i inne wielkie budynki wrecz chlubia sie biela i przestrzenia.

home office, my projects, presentations

Space for the home office / miejsce na domowe biuro

So we have a Flat. Our first baby. We love it and have a million ideas for it.

The slight problem is, that it’s in a different country 😦 back home. We’re in London, the flat is in Poland. And even though we bought it over a year and a half ago, we never managed to live there for longer but a few weeks as we moved abroad around this time.

Can you imagine how painful it is to have to wait to make it gorgeous?! Nevertheless, me and my husband are planning and decorating it in our minds (…and on paper. And in 3D).

Apart from the usual decorating aspect, we need to decide on the functional division of the space. We both love open plan living, so we have decided not to build the second tiny bedroom for now, in order to have a bigger living space. So, the floor plan is something like this:

Our flat's floor plan
Our flat's floor plan

Since we have a small flat (around 60m2), we need to have multifunctional spaces (and fair enough as open living is all about that!), bearing in mind we have not been able to do anything about the wall of the living room as this is the supporting wall to really reshape the space.

What we needed to figure out is – where will we put the home office space? Where is my piano going to be? Will we have a formal dining space? Where will our guests sleep? How to fit all that in there and not clutter the space unnecessarily? And questions to be solved later – where will we plan the room for the baby? What if I’ll need a bigger / enclosed space for my studio?

For now – ideas for the first problem – the workspace.

The possible locations for the desk are:

  1. in the ex-tiny-bedroom / ‘dining’ room
  2. in the living room
  3. in the bedroom

For now I’ve planned the first option (desk in the dining room) and here are the results:

  • Version 1 using the colors we have on the walls now (white and green):
Workspace in the dining room
Workspace in the dining room
Workspace in the dining room
Workspace in the dining room

Advantages: It’s comfortable in terms of space (the dining table can move slightly more towards the kitchen if necessary). Good natural light available, but not South-facing so will be bearable in the summer. Also, close to the coffee supplies which is so important when working! 🙂

Disadvantages: It’s in the center of the activity so there is potential for disruption. Also, no space for a couch there (we originally had one where I’ve now put the desk).

  • This is a very similar version just with a statement wallpaper added. Still unsure which option I prefer.
Workspace in the dining room wallpaper

…and what do you think?

Coastal living, czyli inspiracje morzem

Ah… coast! Ah…  sea, ocean, lakes and rivers! But how many of us can have a view like that?

Harmony And Home Beach house dining room

With such exterior, it really does not take much to create a wow factor inside the house, as the outside is the main decoration.

However, even if you don’t live by the beach (and you probably don’t), there is anyway nothing to stop you from replicating that coastal look, bringing the feelings of ambience, relaxation, comfort and serenity. I have chosen a few images of beautiful interiors which you can achieve without this amazing view or huge windows. Get inspired with soothing cool color palette, clean spaces and comfortable lounge seating.

Charakteryzuje sie on lekkoscia, delikatnoscia, swiezoscia chlodnych kolorow, a takze wprowadza nastrojowy i zrelaksowany klimat.

‘My Deco’ free interior design software / Darmowy program do projektowania wnetrz

I have started playing with a really cool  and free interior design software – My deco. It allows for creation of a moodboard – either from uploaded images, or from the existing galleries, or even from websites by installing a plugin allowing to copy any image you see in the Internet to your gallery. Then you can share your moodboard with others.

However, what’s really great is the Design a 3D room interior design software. Not only has it a gallery of real items, so that you create more realistic spaces; you even are given all the information on the shop, price and can actually buy the item straight from the program. While you probably won’t do it too often, the advantage it gives is that the price list of the whole room is generated when the room is ready.

Finally, the absolute best is the free rendering this program offers! You have to wait a few hours, sometimes even a day or two (probably due to demand), but the result is really realistic for free software! And you don’t need to know anything about that – rendering is automatic.

And now to…

My FIRST project!

…just as well I found it as I needed to quickly design a bedroom. Some details: walls of these energetic 40-something year-olds’ bedroom are already of creamy yellow color, so color scheme and accessories needed to be chosen around that. I prepared two versions to match the homeowners’ personalities:

  • a glamour – style inspired version with stylized mirrors and lamps, and ornamental wallpaper;
  • and a more contemporary one, with simpler shapes and striped wallpaper.

Naturally these are still drafts to be consulted for a more final look.

Please remember that I just started using it and am only getting to know the program’s possibilities; I thought, however, that I’ll share with you those first samples, mixing both styles (as it is yet unclear which one will be preferred).

Before the rendering, in the editing mode, you can get images like this:

Bedroom visualisation - draft

After the rendering, you get images like this:

Bedroom visualization render 1 - mixed influences with wall sticker

Bedroom visualization render 3 - glamour inspired
Bedroom visualization render 3 - glamour inspired
Bedroom visualization render 4 - glamour inspired
Bedroom visualization render 4 - glamour inspired
Bedroom visualization render 5 - family photos

I will gladly read what you think about those drafts. Perhaps you have some complementing furnishings in mind? Or even a totally different idea in mind?

Znalazlam również wczoraj bardzo przyjemny i darmowy program do projektowania i stylizacji wnetrz My deco. Mozna w nim na przyklad stworzyc moodboards – dosÅ‚ownie ‘tablice nastrojów’. Zadaniem takiej tablicy jest zebranie inspiracji do danego pomieszczenia; skrawki materialow, zdjecia, kolory, podlogi, ale takze inspiracje w szerszym znaczeniu – np. zdjecie z ulubionych wakacji, do ktorego chcielibyscie by pokoj nawiazywal.  Stworzyc te tablice w programie mozna albo z gotowych elementow, albo wrzucic swoje zdjecia, lub tez nawet skopiowac dowolne zdjecie z internetu dzieki malemu pluginowi ktory mozna zainstalowac w przegladarce.

Jeszcze ciekawsza czesc programu to Design a 3D room czyli ‘zaprojektuj pokoj w 3D’. Te przedmioty mozna tez zakupic bezposrednio z programu. Mimo ze to pewnie bedzie rzadkie, przydaje sie opcja automatycznej wyceny calego pokoju lacznie z dodatkami.

Jednak najlepszy aspekt Design a 3D room to darmowy rendering (symulacja obiektow). Dzieki temu, wnetrza wygladaja duzo bardziej realistycznie.

Moj PIERWSZY projekt!

Obrazki te przedstawiaja pierwsze wersje sypialni ktora musialam dosc szybko zaprojektowac, i cale szczescie natknelam sie na ten program! Sypialnia nalezaca do energicznych czterdziestoparolatkow jest juz pomalowana na zolto, wiec musialam stworzyc schemat kolorystyczny i dobrac dodatki pasujace do tego koloru. W tworzeniu zainspirowaly mnie dwie wersje stylistyczne, pasujace do charakterow mieszkancow:

  • glamour – stylizowane lampy, lustra, zdobne tapety;
  • klasyczny / wspolczesny – z nutka dodatkow retro.

Wczoraj wieczorem znalazlam swietnego bloga – Young House Love, gdzie mÅ‚ode małżeÅ„stwo prezentuje swój dom, z którego narodziÅ‚a siÄ™ ich pasja projektowania wnÄ™trz.

Drugi blog ktory prezentuje to Like Merchant Ships.

(ps.
